The History of Château Bélingard

CELTS, WILD VINES AND BARRELS

Bélingard: Beleen gaard, Garden of the Sun

Belin or Beleen (Belenos), the Celtic God of the Sun gave his name to Bélingard: Beleen gaard, Garden of the Sun. In fact, a rock chiseled into the shape of a chair, an ancient altar of Sacrifice, was discovered in this area.

Nowadays, there is no talk of young virgins or brave soldiers, but of a love of winemaking and the terroir.

And even if History is never far off, you will hear about grape varieties, harvesting and vinification. Seven generations of the same family have been working to glorify this clay-limestone terroir, clinging to the hillsides of the Left Bank of the Dordogne River.

Since 1820…

Since Château Bélingard was restored by Rose Clair Ste Croix Clauzel, several generations have been and gone:

  • Hyppolitewho build up the estate by purchasing and swapping a multitude of vineyard parcels and who created the company.
  • Paulwho ran the estate while exercising his profession of Doctor.
  • Marthe who loved this land.
  • Blanche and her husband Paul who steered the château safely through war and peace, in hell or high water!
  • Pierre “the builder”, who expanded the vineyards and was responsible for the first commercial successes.
  • Laurent and Sylvie who brought the château into the modern age, in the vineyards, the cellars and in terms of its sales approach, while also taking environmental concerns into consideration.

Towards the end of the 1980’s…

Laurent and Sylvie de Bosredon took over the management of the Estate in true family spirit.

After university and early careers with important industrial and sales groups, they embraced a profession, or rather a passion, which was totally new to them.

But Laurent and Sylvie are inquisitive and outgoing by nature. Careful not to let any new wine growing, winemaking or marketing techniques pass them by, they shaped Château Bélingard into the business it is today.

Today…

The team, lead by Vianney de Tastes, devotes great care and attention to the production of Fine Wines from Bergerac and Monbazillac.

The generations that went before, within their own era, at their own pace, and with their own views, shaped the soul of Bélingard.
